An introduction to Video on PLAYSTATION® 3

PLAYSTATION®3 is not just about the games, at its heart beats a powerful Blu-ray Disc player plus a 60GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD) to look after your other video files.

PLAYSTATION®3 has a Blu-ray Disc Player built in. Watch your favourite films in true High Definition (up to 1080p depending on your television). With a massive capacity on each BD, allowing up to three hours of HD video plus nine hours of Standard Definition (SD) bonus material to be stored on one double layer Blu-ray Disc, you'll be sure of no disc-swapping interruptions.

Your visual entertainment doesn't start and end with the astonishing Blu-ray Disc Player. As the heart of your home multimedia enjoyment, PS3 is also the perfect place to store, organise and enjoy an array of digital video files. Store your existing digital movies on the PLAYSTATION® 3 system's Hard Disk Drive, plus download new content from PLAYSTATION®Store including High Definition movie and game trailers.

You can also access video files stored on your PS3 via Remote Play with your PSP™. Build a massive library of staggering visual entertainment on your PS3, and access it in a different location via PSP™.

Specify audio / subtitle language

[HDD Content Audio Language] and [HDD Content Subtitle Language] are options under [Video Settings].

You can now specify the language for audio content and the subtitle language to be used when playing content that is saved on storage media, such as downloaded content from PlayStation Store.

* Depending on the content, you may not be able to specify the audio or subtitle language.

Use the Wireless Controller to view content

Find out how to use the Wireless Controller for fast forward and fast reverse operations.

You can use the right stick of the Wireless Controller to perform fast forward or fast reverse operations during video content playback. You can control the playback speed by changing the way you rotate the right stick.

Press upward, and then turn clockwise

Slow (forward) -> fast forward

Press upward, and then turn counter-clockwise

Slow (reverse) -> fast reverse

Upscale DVD output

Find out how you can improve the picture quality when playing back DVDs.

You can upscale the video content of DVDs to HD resolution. In order to benefit from this feature, you will need a HD ready television.

What is upscaling?

Upscaling is a feature for taking video that was recorded at SD resolution (576p/576i) and displaying it at HD resolution (1080p/1080i/720p). Because the video content of PlayStation format software, PlayStation 2 format software, and commercial DVDs is recorded at SD resolution, higher quality video can be achieved by enabling upscaled output.

Upscaling DVD output

[DVD Upscaler] is an option in [BD/DVD Settings] under Settings. This enables users to adjust settings for upscaled output of DVDs.

[Off]: Disable upscaled output.
[Double Scale]*: Upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.
[Normal]: Upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
[Full Screen]: Upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image
* This option can be used only when the video output of the PS3 system is set to 1080p/1080i.

* When playing copyright-protected DVD content such as commercially available DVD-Video, an HDMI cable is required to upscale output.
* If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when upscaled, set this option to [Off].

Create a multimedia movie

Find out how you can create a multimedia movie with EyeCreate.

On the [Edit] menu, captured clips can be transferred onto a storyboard and arranged into a slideshow. Video clips can be reviewed and arranged to create a longer movie by transferring a captured clip at the top of the screen on the review bar to the storyboard. With the clapperboard highlighted, each clip can be moved between other clips on the storyboard. If you add a sound recording to an existing storyboard sequence, it will become part of the soundtrack.

Each clip can be manipulated individually with the [Manipulate Clips] menu:

[Split Clip]: Splits the movie into two clips at the marked position.

[Reverse Clip]: Reverses the clip to play from end to beginning.

[Clip volume]: Sets the volume for the individual clip.

[Soundtrack volume]: Sets the volume for the whole soundtrack.

When satisfied, press the X button to join up your storyboard sequence into one complete movie clip. The new video will appear on the far right of the review bar - and also on the far right of the review bar within Capture Mode, where you can view your new clip at full size.

Hint:

* The white icons in the [Edit] menu at the top of the screen will tell you what type of media each clip is: a clapperboard is video, a camera is a still and a microphone is a sound clip.
* When reviewing or playing your movie, pressing R3 will also stop and start it. You can control the speed of replay by incremental movements on the right stick of the SIXAXIS Wireless Controller.
