They may all look the same, but lemmings have many different abilities that can help you keep them safe and sound.
Fresh from their activities on PSP, hordes of green-haired lemmings are now wandering toward a brand new adventure on PlayStation 2. Saving the lives of creatures that are so good at killing themselves might seem like a bit of a fruitless endeavour, but while it may be hard to tell them apart, lemmings have a pretty diverse skillset. Most lemmings are content to just walk in one direction until they go plummeting to their doom. These little guys are known as Walkers. But there are a host of other lemmings each with their own special abilities that will help you get all your lemmings home safely.
ClimberThese guys can climb straight up any surface, scaling tall objects and reaching previously unattainable heights. Not a job for lemmings with vertigo, Climbers are nonetheless an essential part of any lemming escape plan.
FloaterLeave a lemming walking in one direction for too long and chances are it will end in a long drop and a sudden stop. Thanks to their red and white striped umbrellas however, Floaters can gently drift to safety without splatting on the ground below.
BlockerLemmings won't stop for anything, except the noble Blocker. Useful for keeping your lemmings in one place while you work out your route, Blockers won't move under any circumstances.
BomberIn fact, you'll probably need one of these guys to get rid of him. Activate a Bomber and five seconds later he'll detonate, making the ultimate sacrifice by blowing up for the good of lemming-kind.
BuilderBuilders are always ready to drop everything and whip you up a bridge at a moment's notice - very useful when you've got a gang of lemmings happily walking towards a lava pit or deep chasm. Unfortunately Builders can only carry 12 bricks at a time, and when these run out they'll revert to being a Walker, even if their bridge ends in mid air!
BasherIt happens to the best of us. You reach an impenetrable brick wall that you need to get past, with no sign of a way through. That's where the Basher comes in. Arms windmilling in front of them, Bashers can smash their way horizontally through most obstacles blocking their path, creating a handy lemming-sized tunnel for their chums.
DiggerSimilar to a Basher, Diggers use their pneumatic drills to dig vertically downwards through most materials. Take care not to dig too deep though, or the other lemmings will splat when they fall in the hole. Make sure you keep an eye on the Diggers too, as without supervision they're liable to carry right on digging through the bottom of the screen to their doom.
MinerWith their little yellow hard hats and tiny pickaxes, miners serve a useful function as well as being totally adorable. Digging diagonally downwards, Miners offer a more gentle descent than the tunnels dug by Diggers, but are just as prone to digging themselves off the edge of the world.
So things aren't as bad as they may seem. Use the different lemming skills properly and your lemmings will live to wander off a cliff another day!
