The Buzz series has evolved with each of its iterations. With the PS2 titles becoming more specialised – see Hollywood – the sets in which the action takes place are intended to reflect that. For Pop, the goal is to create an environment reminiscent of TV music shows; for example CD:UK, MTV European Music Awards, Top of the Pops, Top 50, etc.
To achieve this ‘live music show’ atmosphere, a ‘studio audience’ is key; the feeling of an excited, young crowd enthralled by the action on stage will bring a far livelier atmosphere than previous games in the series. However the biggest change will be in the vibrancy and life of the set itself. With fewer key gameplay elements to focus on during the game (Music relied on the Jumbotron to display answers; subsequent games have been very visual-asset heavy), the set itself, along with the characters, need to be more ‘animated’. Some examples of how this will be achieved: - The stage lights will pulse and react according to the music track being played
- The contestants will each have numerous ‘dances’ to perform
- Floor lighting will become intrinsically linked with the GUI; each contestant stands on a light square that will light green or red depending on the validity of the answers they give
- The ‘bomb’ in Pass The Bomb will be displayed on the video wall behind the contestants; a full screen (video wall) explosion occurs when it goes off. A similar technique will be used for other traditionally PIP-based elements
- Greater use of camera angles to show the action in the most engaging light every round
